Shakespeare praised its ability to captivate the human spirit, Thomas Mace called it ‘noble and heroic’, and others extolled the lute for its intimate, melancholic sound. One thing is clear: this little instrument has a great deal to offer musically. And besides, is it really small? Not necessarily – some lutes are as long as two metres!

In the run-up to the concert Pour la luth / Klara Twentysomethings on 28 February, BachPlus is organising this lecture-performance.

Koen Uvin takes you on a journey through the fascinating world of the lute and its many variations, discussing its origins, construction and rich repertoire. Nathalie Fransen and Wido Uvin, both teachers at the Utopia Aalst Academy of Performing Arts, provide live music on the Renaissance lute, archlute and theorbo. Tristan Driessens plays the ud.

No idea what an ud is? Then you definitely need to come along!
