Johann Sebastian Bach’s motets rank among the very finest works in the vocal repertoire. In them, Bach demonstrates his mastery of polyphony and the great richness of his musical language, employing a wide variety of forms, instrumentations and compositional styles. It is no wonder that his motets are the only vocal works of his that have been performed continuously since his death.

As well as two-part motets by Bach, his contemporaries and relatives, supplemented by music from the Florilegium Portense and the Eisenacher Kantorenbuch, the programme also includes, as a special treat, a motet that the young Bach – who, according to tradition, had a beautiful soprano voice – is said to have sung himself as a choirboy!
