In 1717, George Frideric Handel became court composer to the fabulously wealthy and notorious James Brydges, Duke of Chandos. At his court, Handel composed religious music that was performed in the Duke's private chapel. The result: no fewer than eleven beautiful but rarely performed Chandos Anthems for choir, soloists and orchestra.

In these anthems, Handel achieves a masterful synthesis between the passionate lyricism of Italian opera and the spirituality of English church music.
