"Dresden is a center of music, where taste and artistry unite in the most beautiful harmony," wrote Johann Scheibe in Der Critische Musicus (1737). In the eighteenth century, Dresden was indeed a vibrant city full of Baroque architecture, where opera flourished and the visual arts flourished. Grand masters such as Johann David Heinichen and Jan Dismas Zelenka were key figures in the court orchestra and wrote music that sparkled with vitality, expression, and originality.
