Shakespeare praised its evocative power, Thomas Mace described the lute as ‘noble and heroic’. By the time Bach was alive, the lute had already passed its heyday, yet magnificent music was still being composed for it. Bach also played the lute. He made an arrangement of his Fifth Cello Suite, on which, unconcerned about his limited knowledge of French, he wrote the notation ‘pour la luth’ (instead of ‘le luth’).

BachPlus is investing in young talent and has invited two Klara Twentysomethings – mezzo-soprano Sterre Decru and lutenist Stan Geudens – to explore the baroque lute repertoire together. And to immerse themselves fully in the intimate atmosphere of the lute, Bart Naessens will be playing an instrumental curiosity: the lautenklavier.
