Christoph Birkmann (1703–1771) studied theology, rhetoric, English, Italian, astronomy and music. As an accomplished musician and pupil of Bach, he was also an outstanding writer of cantata texts. Although only three cantatas have so far been attributed to him with certainty, recent research suggests that Bach consulted Birkmann far more frequently.

In this programme, BachPlus performs Bach’s cantatas set to texts by this remarkable ‘homo universalis’: Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden (BWV 6) and Was Gott tut das ist wohlgetan (BWV 98).
